A jar for each appeal or event. Print the QR code, supporters pay on their own phones, and the money lands in your group's bank account. The treasurer sees every payment as it comes in.

Built for fundraising in bursts

Everything below comes with every TipJar.nz jar. No add-ons, no tiers.

A jar for each appeal or event

Winter appeal, quiz night, gala, op-shop counter: give each its own jar and its own code. When it's over, the jar keeps its record and the next one starts clean.

Goals with a progress bar

Name what the money's for and set a target. Supporters see the bar move, and a bar that's nearly full gets people over the line.

Menus with priced items

Sausages, slices, event tickets, entry at the door. List them with prices and supporters tap what they're buying. Koha jars take any amount.

Cash sales too

Plenty of people still pay cash. Ring it up in the POS on any phone and card and cash sit in the same day's takings. See how the POS works.

Printable QR posters

Posters, tent cards and stickers with your code, ready to print for the hall noticeboard or the newsletter. See the printables.

Volunteers without logins

Whoever's on the stall this year doesn't need an account. Share the private POS link, they unlock it with a 4-digit PIN, and they're serving.

After the AGM

New treasurer, same jar

Committees turn over. The group's jars shouldn't live in one volunteer's head, or one volunteer's shoebox.

Invite the next treasurer

Add committee members to your team from the dashboard. When the role changes hands, the new person signs in and picks up where the last one left off.

Every payment on record

Who paid, when, and for what, appeal by appeal. Export it as a CSV for the annual accounts instead of piecing it together from bank statements.

The group's bank account

Connect the group's New Zealand bank account once, after a quick identity check with Stripe. Payouts go there, not to whoever ran the stall.

Between events

What it costs when you're not fundraising

Most groups fundraise a few times a year. An EFTPOS terminal charges for the other months as well.

Compared on TipJar.nz EFTPOS terminal Cash tin
Monthly fees None $20 to $40 None
Setup cost Free $50 to $200 Free
Contract None 12 to 36 months None
A quiet month costs $0 The rental, regardless $0

EFTPOS figures are typical rental prices, the same ones on our pricing page. TipJar.nz charges 2%, plus card fees, only on money you collect.

On the day and after

What it takes to run the stall and close the books

The real cost of a cash tin isn't a fee. It's the helpers, the counting and the trip to the bank.

Compared on TipJar.nz EFTPOS terminal Cash tin
Places to pay Every poster and table 1 per terminal 1 per tin
Helpers needed None for card 1 per terminal 1 per tin
Counting up Done as it happens End-of-day report By hand, after packing up
Treasurer's record Every payment, itemised Totals on a statement Whatever got written down

Cash is still welcome. Ring it up in the POS and the day's takings show card and cash together.

The maths

What your group would actually keep

Winter appeal

80 supporters × $25 = $2,000

Total collected $2,000
Card fees ~$78
TipJar.nz fee (2%) ~$40
Group receives ~$1,882

Based on $25 per supporter with domestic cards

Quiz night

20 tables × $50 = $1,000

Total collected $1,000
Card fees ~$33
TipJar.nz fee (2%) ~$20
Group receives ~$947

Based on $50 per table with domestic cards

Gala food stall

250 orders × $8 = $2,000

Total collected $2,000
Card fees ~$129
TipJar.nz fee (2%) ~$40
Group receives ~$1,831

Based on $8 per order with domestic cards. Smaller payments carry more of the 30c card fee.

Card fees are about 2.7% + 30c a payment for a standard NZ card. Run your own numbers on the pricing page.

Common questions

What does it cost?+

TipJar.nz takes 2%, plus card fees (roughly 2.7% + 30c a payment for a standard NZ card). Call it about 5c in the dollar all-in. There's no monthly fee, so a month with no fundraising costs nothing.

We only fundraise a few times a year. Is it worth setting up?+

That's exactly who it suits. Set up a jar for the next appeal or event, and leave it be when it's over. Nothing ticks over between events.

Do we need an EFTPOS terminal?+

No. Supporters pay on their own phones with Apple Pay, Google Pay or card. Your only equipment is the printed code and, if you want to record cash, any phone with a browser.

Can people still pay cash?+

Of course. Ring cash sales up in the POS so they sit beside the card payments in the day's takings. The cash itself goes to the bank the way it always has.

How does the money get to our group?+

Connect the group's New Zealand bank account once, after a quick identity check with Stripe. After that, card payments land in that account automatically, usually the next business day.

What happens when our treasurer changes?+

Invite the new treasurer to your team from the dashboard. The jars, the payment history and the bank details belong to the group's account, so nothing walks out the door at the AGM.

Can supporters give koha instead of buying something?+

Yes. Set a jar up for koha and supporters choose their own amount. Add a goal and they can watch the progress bar move.

Do supporters need an app or an account?+

Neither. They scan the code, pay in about ten seconds, and get an emailed receipt.
